What is Athletic Training
Athletic Training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergency, acute, or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic Training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.
Athletic trainers provide medical services to all types of patients, not just athletes participating in sports, and can work in a variety of job settings. For more information on the educational background of athletic trainers please visit: www.nata.org/about/athletic-training/education-overview

Emergency Action Plans (EAP)
An Emergency Action Plan (EAP) serves as a blueprint for athletic trainers and other emergency personnel to follow in the event of a life threatening injury. It is recommended by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) that each institution or organization hosting athletics have an comprehensive, written EAP in place.
Further information regarding the components of an EAP can be found in the "National Athletic Trainers' Association Position Statement: Emergency Planning in Athletics" www.nata.org/sites/default/files/emergencyplanninginathletics.pdf
To assist athletic trainers and organizations sponsoring athletic competition, the MTATA Secondary Schools Committee with the Montana High School Association Sports Medicine Advisory Committee has created a venue specific EAP template based on recommendations from the Korey Stringer Institute and the NATA 2012 Position Statement “Emergency Planning in Athletics.” This document is required to be filled out for every athletic venue in each MHSA member high school as of fall 2024.

Concussions
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the body or head causing the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. This movement of the brain within the skull can cause damage to brain cells and chemical changes in the brain. Most concussion are not life-threatening injuries, and are often described by medical providers as "mild" brain injuries. Even so, the identification and proper treatment of concussion is essential.
